Hedy Buzan was born in Laguna Beach. Her father, Boris Buzan was also an artist and exhibitor at the Festival of Arts.
Hedy studied printmaking at UC Santa Cruz. After graduation she printed lithographs for herself and other artists at Pine Flat Press, then joined the Peace Corps and served in the West Indies. This led to a job teaching at the Jamaica School of Art in Kingston. After her return to Laguna Beach, Hedy began exhibiting her art at the Sawdust Festival and the Festival of Arts.
She served on both organization’s boards, where she had a particular interest in arts education. She left Laguna for Washington D.C. where she received her MFA in Design at The George Washington University. Upon returning to Laguna, Hedy continued her work in printmaking expanding this study to include collage, monotype and painting. She continued to explore these techniques and taught Drawing, Design, Printmaking and Mixed Media/ Collage courses at Saddleback College.
Hedy currently exhibits her work at the Sawdust Festival. Her studio is open by appointment.
Hedy has described her current work as follows:
“I paint abstract paintings that reference a concept, often one inspired by nature. My goal is to create works that have presence but are elusive; reference specific phenomena yet are at the same time mysterious and evocative.
Often I explore the relationship of the shore and sea. Some of these are representative and others are more abstract. The dialogue between colors, shapes, and textures often signifies archetypal landscapes while simultaneously creating abstract relationships.  As the viewer spends time with each piece they make discoveries and new connections as each painting or monotype becomes its own ‘landscape’ of marks, shapes, colors, and textures.
